Importance of Roof and Wall Coatings for Your House

roof coatingYour home will be one of the biggest investments in your life, thus keeping your walls and roofs in a good condition makes great sense and is necessary in protecting your investment. Wall and roof coatings will lengthen your home’s life while insulating and protecting it from weather and rain. A lot of rubberized and acrylic coatings resist mold while giving preventing home leaks. Products that have solar-reflective capabilities will protect a home from the sun’s heat which minimizes the cooling costs during the summer.

Cool-Roof Coatings

A lot of roof coatings are made to reflect the sun. The majority of such cool-roof coatings are made with water-based acrylic elastomers which can be utilized on asphalt, metal, bitumen, wood and rubber. Choose a coating which incorporates rust, mildew and water protection with solar reflection to obtain the best results. A number of them are based on materials like biobased urethane and agricultural oils.

Roof Coatings

Roof-coating products will seal moisture out and renew surfaces. A lot of roof coatings are made to resist fire, rust and mold. As you select a product, pick a formula that is made for your particular roofing material. Majority of products which give protection against weather and sun damages can be utilized on gravel or tar.

Wall Coatings

There are plenty of coatings for the wall that can be used with roofs. Such coatings contain rubber or acrylic making them elastic. They work by protecting against damaged caused by mold, rust, water, mildew and moss. They are able to give shield to your home from storm damage and ultraviolet light making them wise investments for your home.

Roofs and walls must be dry before any coating should be applied. If there is a possibility of rain, the project should not be carried out. The roof must be free from debris. You need to wash the wall and roof using a pressure washer so that the residue will be removed. Using a roller or brush, you can apply the coating making sure that the application is even. It must not be allowed to spread or puddle too thinly in any areas.

Over time, masonry products like brick and stone will wear down due to weather. When porous walls will be soaked in water, the structural property of your home will be compromised. The application of a protective water seal will protect the house from deterioration and weathering.

Exterior Wall Painting Ideas

Exterior Wall Painting IdeasThe color of your outside walls says as much about your home as your interiors. Think about it. It is the first aspect of your house that anyone will see. So it is important that those walls get as much attention as your interiors. Painting is the fastest way to transform the appearance of your walls. You can either brighten up the look of your home or tone it done in a note. As time goes by the color of the paint fades. The outside walls get affected more because they are open to the elements. The constant exposure to the sun, the rains, dust, smoke and pollution affects the paint, making it dull and faded.

Painting exterior walls gives your home a protective layer against the elements. Skimping on quality may result in damage to the structure of your house. For example, if moisture is sealed into walls, it can result in mold and rot. It is better to incur the minimal cost of painting the outside walls rather that bear the heavy charges of dealing with moisture damage. The sun also lends its hand in slowly spoiling the paint. It can fade the color and the ultraviolet rays can break down the binder of the paint. When this gets deteriorated, the pigment takes the form of powder and can get either washed away in the rain or blown away with the wind. The exposure to rain can cause the paint to peel off in strips. That is why it is important to choose the right type of paint that is best suited for the weather conditions. Make sure that while painting exterior walls, you are using paints that are suited for the predominant weather type and are of good quality. By doing this, you can wait for a longer periods of time before repainting your walls.

Another important aspect to consider is the right time to repaint your walls. It should be ideally done in the months that are hot so that the paints can dry. The monsoon season is never a good time to repaint your house as the moisture can spoil it. But you don’t have to paint your walls to only protect it from the weather. You can also just paint them to infuse novelty into your home. A new shade of paint can transform your home into a palace. Painting walls is an effective way of rejuvenating your home and giving it a new look. If you are looking to sell your house, a fresh new paint job can drive up the value of your home. In this way painting your home is an investment.

Interior Painting Ideas for Kitchen

Choosing the right color palette for your kitchen might seem like a daunting task. However, if you visualize the atmosphere that you want to create whilst keeping the style in mind, you will be able to select the right ones. Since you spend a sizable amount of time in this room, its feel should be fresh and invigorating. If you also use it as a dining room where you entertain your guests, it should be painted in colors that are soothing and inviting. Given below are some painting ideas.

For a Modern Kitchen
People usually associate a modern and minimal décor with a black-and-white color scheme. However, this look can be achieved using other colors as well. Bold and vivid hues like eggplant, orange, red, and olive green, work very well. However, they should be used strategically. For example, if you have an open-plan kitchen, you can paint the walls in dual tones. First, divide a wall into three equal portions, horizontally. Paint the lower two-thirds in a dramatic color–like crimson-red in a matte-finish. Paint the upper one-third wall as well as the ceiling in another color, like light-orange. This gives a contemporary look to the room.

For a Cottage-style Kitchen
A cottage-style kitchen should project a rustic and relaxed atmosphere, which is best achieved by using warm and bright paint colors. Bright-orange, sunny-yellow, lime-green, and tomato-red are some options. Choose colors that match the cabinets and backsplash. Cooler tones like pale-eggshell blue and pale-green on the cabinets match very well with warm-toned walls and backsplashes. The best way to complement it is to use bistro-style tables, red-and-white-patterned checkered window treatments, and colorful area rugs.

For a Mediterranean-style Kitchen
Neutral colors interspersed with bright ones like terracotta, sea-blue, teal, and tan, work best for this type of kitchen. White is a dominant color used in Mediterranean themes. However, a completely white color palette can make the room look stark and bare. Hence, you can paint the cabinets and shelves in dark-brown or terracotta. These colors contrast well with white, and make the space seem airy and appear larger. You can use shades of sea-green, coral, chocolate, beige, and yellow on the walls. Along with this, you can use curved wooden furniture, clay tiles for the backsplash, and patterned window treatments to complete the Mediterranean look.

For a Small Kitchen
Small kitchens can be painted in the most trendy hues, and still look very attractive and appear larger than they are. Choose light colors like steel-blue and slate-gray. You can also paint it in pristine white, with cabinets and shelves of the same color. To make an all white or light hued space look more interesting, add small bursts of colors like celery-green, dusky-rose, and lavender. These pastel colors will make the space look livelier and airy. Use these colors as accents by applying them on crown moldings, rugs, backsplash, and cabinet trimmings.

Always use paint colors that complement the style of your kitchen. Also ensure that the other components of the decor–like the backsplash, shelves, window treatments, and cabinets, all go well with the paint scheme.

How to Arrange a Sectional Sofa in the Living Room

A sectional sofa is something that every home should have. They have the quality to blend into any type of environment (provided that you choose the right one!). If you think that you won’t get sectional sofas, which are apt for the dimensions of your living room, then you are wrong. There is such a great variety in the design and style of sectional sofas, that you are bound to find one that is apt for your home.

People often tell me that their living room is not the same since they brought home a sectional sofa. They say, that now, everyone in their home can sit “together” comfortably. This is the probably the best feature of sectional sofas, there is room for everyone. A good sofa can become the highlight of your home, it can be your relaxation hub.

In order to get the right effect, you should arrange your sofa well. The arrangement does not entirely depend on the positioning of the sofa, it is highly influenced by the things around it. To make it easy for you, I have divided this section into 2 parts:

Before You Choose the Sofa
Choosing the right sofa is the key to the perfect arrangement. Here are a few things that you should do before buying the sofa:

If you have a big living room, then you may not have to worry about the size of the sofa, but if you do not have too much space, then you will have to take the measurements of your room. It is always good to measure the dimensions of your living room, which will help you understand whether the sofa that you choose will fit properly in the room, and not make your room look stuffed. Taking measurements will also help, if you want to get the sectional sofa customized.

This is the most fun, and perhaps the most challenging part too. It is fun as, this is the part where you actually decide the color and design of your sectional sofa, and it is challenging because if you go wrong here, you might end up having a sofa that does not suit your living room. Look at your living room and visualize different types (round sofa, curved sofa, L-shaped sofa, etc.) of sectional sofas in your room, in different colors. You will eventually (after several discussions and arguments) understand what you really want in your living room.

After You Bring Home the Sofa
Now that you have brought home the sectional sofa that will suit your living room, you should arrange it properly. Here are a few tips that you should use while arranging:

Place the sofa exactly opposite to the focal point (fireplace, television, beautiful view, etc.) of your living room.
It should not obstruct any windows or doors.
It will look better if there is no contact between your sofa and the walls of your living room.
The sofa should not obstruct the movement of the people.
Place a coffee table or an ottoman in front of the sofa.
If your sofa has a chaise, then place a small table next to it, to add to the convenience.
If you have a love chair next to your sofa, then place a lamp between them.
You can also place plants near your sofa, but see that the plants do not intrude the space of your so

How to Apply Touch Up Paint on Walls

You painted your walls with so much effort and care, the paint complemented your home for several years, but now your walls lack the previous charm, due to the chipping, or scuffing, or peeling of paint. If you cannot afford repainting, then a touch up is the best option for you. A touch up is not restricted to walls, you can apply it on your car too, in case of any damage. In this article, we are strictly referring to touch up on walls.

How to Touch Up Paint on Walls

Applying touch up paint on the walls is not a difficult task, you will be done in an hour, but your touch ups will appear like blotches if you are impatient, and if you do not get the right paint. The difficulty does not lie in the act of applying the touch up, but the art of touching up. Here are a few points that you should consider, when you apply touch up paint on your walls:

Before you start with the touch up process, it is important that you carefully observe all the touch up areas. If you find any holes fill them, or if you spot any other damages, repair them. If you feel that the paint looks damaged due to the dirt, then clean the wall first. If the problem is not solved, then you should proceed with the touch up.

Half the battle is won, if you get the right paint for the touch up. Those of you who have some paint left in the can that you had used to paint your walls, are lucky. If you are someone who does not have any paint left, it might be difficult for you to find the same shade of paint (unless it is a stock color). Once you get the required shade of paint, pour it into a tray, and reduce it to about 15 percent using a reducer. Stir the paint well. If you had used a roller to paint your walls, then you better use a roller to touch up (use a small roller this time), else you can use a paint brush.

Touch Up
Now, that you are ready with the tray of paint, and the roller (or paint brush), you can start with the touch up. To begin, choose a touch up area which is not so prominent, and apply the paint to the center of that area, and then feather the edges. Now, wait for the paint to dry (you can use a blow dryer if you are impatient). After the touch up has dried, examine the wall from various angles to detect any inconsistency. If you find that the touch up blends with the paint on the wall, then touch up the other areas too.

Things to Remember

If you feel that some area needs to be primed before the touch up, do prime it.
If you face the problem of “flashing” (prominent inconsistency in the painting), then you will have to repaint the wall.
The shade of the paint on your wall changes with time, do take the change into account while selecting the paint for the touch up.
Follow the manufacture’s guidelines while handling the paint and the primer.

If you had applied custom paint on your walls, it will be very difficult (nearly impossible) to find the right shade of the paint, as you can never replicate the original proportion of mixing. So, it is better to repaint the wall in this case. If you want to avoid the risk of “flashing”, you can always hire a professional to do the job. In any case, the right paint and the right technique, will make a good touch up. So, just be careful while applying touch up paint on the walls, and I am sure that you will do a nice job!

Interior Painting Ideas for Bedrooms

If you ask me my favorite place in this world, I would say my bedroom. This is one place where I can be simply me! I think this holds true for almost all of us. We relax in our bedrooms, watch TV, read, and talk to our family members. In other words, we carry on a lot of personal activities in this space of our house. That’s why, when it comes to painting the interiors of our bedrooms, we should go in for colors that reflect our personality. Of course, this does not mean that you end up painting the room bright red. Keeping the impact of colors on the room surroundings as well as on the mood of the inhabitants is equally important.

For all those who have taken on the task of painting a bedroom, a bit of knowledge of color psychology is a must. There are basically three kinds of colors, i.e., warm colors, cool colors, and neutral colors.

Warm Colors
Bright colors like yellow, red, and orange are considered warm colors. These colors are known to add energy and vibrancy to a room. They are believed to make the room look dark and small. That’s why, most experts will recommend you to avoid painting your bedroom with these colors.

Cool Colors
Green, blue, and all pastel shades like light pink and light purple fall in this category. Cool colors are believed to have a very soothing effect on the mind and body. If they are used for painting a bedroom, they can relax and calm the persons living in it.

Muted Colors
Neutral colors like gray, beige, skin color, and brown fall in this category. These colors are known to offer stability and comfort to the room surroundings. If painted on the bedroom walls, they can suppress the effect of bright colors used in the accessories or fabrics in the room.

Looking at the effect these colors have, cool colors are the most suited to paint bedrooms. Neutral colors are comforting, provided they are paired with some bright and interesting looking accessories and fabrics. Here are some colors and combinations that are in vogue.

Pink is often a preferred choice for painting a girl’s room, although, it looks equally good as a color for master bedroom walls too. As there are different shades of pink available in paints, a creative idea is to paint three walls in light pink color and the fourth one in a hot, bolder pink shade. This will make your room look interesting and come alive.

Yellow and White
Yellow is a warm color, which can make the surroundings excitable and energetic, instead of relaxing as they should be. Still, if balanced with white accessories and fabrics, as well as some white murals on the wall, it can make your bedroom look very cheerful.

Green and Blue
Both green and blue are very soothing colors. However, many people do not use them in combination, as they appear to be in contrast to one another. In reality, painting the bedroom in lighter shades like these can give it a unique feel. Keeping all the walls light green and painting the ceiling in sky blue with some white stars stenciled on it will lend a very natural feel to the room.

White and Red
If you are someone who wants a tinge of energy in the bedroom, painting the walls in white, and making designs on them in warm colors such as red is a good idea. Making circles of various sizes with red paint on the four corners, while keeping the room walls plain white, will even out the effect of warm color, and at the same time, the warm color will lend energy to the room. With this color combination, keep the room accessories red and white as well.

Sponge painting, faux painting, making hand prints on one of the walls, stripes, polka dots, geometric designs, murals, trees and leaves―you can do whatever you want on your bedroom walls, as long as it does not overwhelm the surroundings or makes the room appear cramped. One last tip―your bedroom is your personal sanctuary, so paint it with some creative designs and colors that are totally you.

Tips on Installing Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding has become the most popular material used to cover the exterior of buildings these days. Vast quantities of this are being used in the remodeling market, as more and more people are using it to cover their old wood siding or replacing their old aluminum siding with it. More than 2 billion square feet of vinyl is being produced in the USA each year.

It is expected that this number will increase substantially with the advent of the new solid core vinyl siding. People who used to dislike vinyl’s looks are finding this product attractive. Also, the wide range of colors that vinyl siding is available in these days – from creams to browns to blues to greens to reds – is another factor for its increasing popularity. Moreover, the increasing cost of energy will also lead to more homeowners opting for it in order to make their houses more energy efficient.

Although vinyl siding is not particularly difficult to install, however, it does require some skill, correct equipment, and a certain amount of layout skills to get it fixed.

Required Tools

A few basic tools are required to install vinyl siding. In case you are a regular DIY-er, then you probably have most of these tools.

A fine bladed circular saw
Chalk line
Tape measure
Caulk and Gun
Framing square
Utility knife
Sawing/Cutting table
Other scaffolding equipment

You will also require some specialized tools like a nail slot punch and a snaplock punch. You could also find a zip unlock tool quite handy.

Preparing the Surface

The surface on which the siding will be installed should be solid as well as smooth. This is also the time to seal off any sources of energy leaks. Seal all the cracks around doors and windows with caulking.

This is also the time when you need to install foil covered foam sheathing in order to make the building energy efficient. This is particularly required when you install the siding on a wood sided or brick house. If it is a new building that you are installing vinyl siding on, then apart from the foam sheathing you also need to install a barrier against the infiltration of water and air.

Begin by Installing the Trim

The cornices of the front door, arches, dryer vent accessories, light block, J channels, corner posts, and so on have to be installed first. In fact, the siding is installed last. The J channels, corner posts, and the other pieces of trim have a channel inside which the vinyl siding’s ends are put. This helps to conceal the cut end of the vinyl siding. The trim and siding are quite pliable if you work in warm weather. They can be cut easily with tinsnips.

Install an Aluminum Starter Strip

The pieces of vinyl siding interlock with each other. It is installed by starting at the bottom of the building and finishing at the top. The slots at the top part are used to blind nail the material. A piece of pre-bent starter strip made of aluminum has to be installed in order to prevent the first piece from flapping about in the breeze. This must be installed parallel or at the level of the line you want to maintain as the vinyl siding is installed.

Make sure to fix the first piece right up against the starter strip, and each of the following pieces of siding should be fixed tightly against the one below. Hence, if the starter strip is fixed crookedly, the rest of the vinyl siding will also be crooked.

Installing the Corner Posts

The trim and siding will contract and expand with the changes in the temperature. Hence, you need to work out a plan to counter this. The corner posts should be fixed at a ¼ inch distance from any horizontal stopping point on the top of each of the corners. Each corner post should be plumbed and then the first nail should be driven on the top of the slots meant for nails. Every nail should be fixed on the top of the slots. This will allow the corner posts to hang from the nails. The nail head should be kept at a distance of 1/32 inch from the vinyl siding. This is what will give room to the vinyl siding to contract and expand.

If two lengths of the corner post have to be spliced together, the upper piece will overlap the lower piece. This will allow the rainwater to be drained off.

Installing the Vinyl Siding

Before actually installing it, examine the full panel of the siding. Observe the lower and upper corners on the front side and back side. These notches have been made at the factory, and they are important. When you get a cut piece of siding you could even need to replicate them. These notches will help you to overlap the pieces of vinyl. Because of the notching, the pieces of siding will be able to be moved sideways independently from the other pieces.

Vinyl siding is prone to rattle in the wind. Also, the heat and sun make it expand and increase in size. These are the reasons that it is very important to nail the sheets properly. If they are nailed loose, they will flap and rattle in the wind. Conversely, if they are nailed in too tightly, they will bend and bubble when the weather is hot. The flange of the siding should be fixed tightly against the sheathing. The nail should be driven in so that its head is kept at a distance of 1/32 inch from the surface of the vinyl siding. This is the correct amount of space required to take care that the various weather conditions do not affect the vinyl siding.

How to Clean Vinyl Siding

A perfect siding can accentuate the looks of your house. Nowadays, vinyl siding is preferred to other alternatives, like wood, steel, stone, brick, and concrete. Like any other siding material, vinyl can also get accumulated with dust and grime, which can eventually attract mold and algae. Thus, the siding may look dull and dirty.

An advantage of vinyl siding is that, it can be cleaned with water and soap. Vinyl siding has to be cleaned at least once a year, to maintain its appearance. Cleaning vinyl siding is not a difficult task. It can be done on your own, if you have enough time and patience. Otherwise, hire a professional. If you want to do it for yourself, you may follow the tips given below.

Before cleaning the siding, make sure that the material is vinyl, and not painted wood or anything like that. The next step is to collect the tools and materials needed for cleaning. Once done, you can start the preparation for such cleaning.

If there are light fixtures or electrical outlets on the outside, cover them with plastic sheets, and fix with adhesive tape. Turn off the power supply to these fixtures and outlets.
Plants and outdoor furniture in the vicinity may suffer damage, if exposed to the cleaning solution. So cover them with plastic.
All the windows and doors should be closed before cleaning. If there is any metallic fixture or article made of etched glass, you should cover it with plastic.
If you suspect growth of mold or mildew on the siding, apply a small amount of bleach on the trouble spots. Mold and mildew growths are often seen as dark spots. When exposed to bleach, mold and mildew turn white and dirt remains dark. You can remove mold and mildew by cleaning the spots with a solution made of nine parts water and one part oxygen bleach.

Tips to Clean Vinyl Siding

For cleaning vinyl siding, you may either use machines, or do it manually. For manual cleaning, you need a ladder, a garden hose, a bucket of water, dish wash liquid, a soft-bristled brush with a long handle, brooms, and towels. If you want to take some mechanical help, you can rent a pressure washer for the cleaning process.

Spray water on the vinyl siding using your garden hose. The cleaning process should start from the top. The water pressure should be medium, because high pressure water may enter the cracks, crevices, lap joints and corners; and may also cause damage to the walls, if they are not waterproof. Always make sure that you are spraying water with the hose pointing towards the ground. If the hose is positioned with an upward nozzle, water may enter through the seams of the siding. A pressure cleaner can help you in spraying the water or soap solution.

The water spray can remove some dust and dirt on the siding, but it may not be sufficient for removal of stubborn grime.
Make a solution of dish wash liquid and water for cleaning. You may substitute dish wash liquid with laundry detergent. Add 1/3 cup of liquid dish soap to a gallon of water.
Apply the soap solution to the siding, using a soft-bristled brush. Start from the top and scrub the siding with the brush dipped in soap solution.
If there is somebody to help, you can ask him/her to spray the soap solution with a hand-pump garden sprayer, while you scrub the siding to remove dirt and other particles.
Once the scrubbing is over, spray water from the top to the bottom. Don’t let any soap particles remain on the siding, as they may leave spots.
You can repeat the process, if the siding does not look clean.

If you want to add some chemicals for cleaning, it is always better to use oxygen bleach than chlorine bleach, as the latter can be harmful for nearby plants and trees.

Procedure to Apply Wall Putty

When repainting walls, it’s very essential to condition the surface for better application of the paint. You would surely not like to see cracks or chips on your newly painted wall. Even if you yourself aren’t going to handle the paint-job, understanding the painting process would help you execute the task efficiently.

Before beginning to paint, you’ll have to get rid of all the stuff in the room by moving it to another room that’s yet to be painted. Remove every single thing, right from ceiling fans to curtains. Things like electric fixtures, trims, and window sills, which can’t be removed should be neatly covered with masking tape to avoid staining. The flooring too should be neatly covered with canvas or tarpaulin to prevent paint splatters from staining the tiles.

The next step is to prepare your walls and apply putty. A wall putty is basically a white-cement based powder ideal for concrete walls, and helps in filling up imperfections and cracks. It provides a damp-resistant and smooth layer for the effective application of paint.

How to Apply Wall Putty

Remove loose particles and flakes using a paint scraper or sandpaper.
Dig out cracks and holes with a screwdriver or any pointed object to remove all loose material from them.
Clean the walls with water and allow them to dry.

Preparing the Putty

Take the required amount of putty in a pan and add water to it in a 2:1 ratio.
Mix thoroughly to get a creamy, paste-like consistency.
Avoid formation of lumps while mixing; the putty should be smooth.
Prepare such that you intend to use it within the next two hours.

Filling Imperfections

Once the putty is ready, use a putty/paint knife or spatula to fill in all the cracks and holes.
Sand the surface with a 220 grit sandpaper.
Apply a primer coat to the wall and allow it to dry.

Steps to Apply the Putty

Apply the first coat of putty using the spatula in a vertical ‘bottom-to-top’ fashion.
Let the first coat stand for a minimum of 7-8 hours till dry.
Once dried, apply the second coat in horizontal strokes to even out the application lines/marks from the first coat.
Now that both the coats are applied, allow the putty to dry thoroughly for a period of 2-3 days depending on the weather.
Finally, use a sandpaper to smooth application marks if any. Finished!

Now that the putty has been successfully applied, you can apply another coat of primer, followed by two coats of the desired color paint.

Porcelain Floor Tiles

When it comes to the flooring, people love to go in for different looks that can enhance the appearance of the room. One can opt for cladding with stone or ceramic to spice up the entire place. There is also a marked confusion between porcelain and ceramic tiles for many people even today.

Most types of tiles that are available today are generally made from clay. These can also comprise other materials. Later, they are kiln-fired. They are generally classified into two groups, which are the porcelain tiles and non-porcelain (Ceramic).

These are further divided into three categories-natural, polished, and glazed. They are generally made with the dust pressed method from porcelain clay. This gives a fine grained, smooth, and dense finish. They have an absorption rate of 0.5% or even less. This is what makes them frost resistant. They are also available in an unglazed, matte, or a very highly polished finish.

This kind is unglazed and unpolished. Comprising only natural porcelain, they have an absorption rate of less than 1%. The absorption rate has no connection with the surface. These are also known as ‘through body’. They are sometimes treated with soluble salts or they can even comprise a different face or a different body. This is known as being double loaded. This means that the top half of the tile in terms of design and texture varies from the bottom half.

These can be partially or completely glazed. This can be altered in the manufacturing process. Most of the glazed tiles have an absorption rate of 0.5%. However, the absorption can be under 0.1% if the clay body is used on the face of the tile. The interesting factor is that, it can even be polished.

In this case, when you mention a polished tile, it means that it comes close to the granite finish. The surface is not actually glaze. These actually comprise natural porcelain that have a polished exterior. One has to employ certain methods to increase their resistance. The process of polishing tends to open the pores. Therefore, whilst grouting, one must ensure that a certain sealer is applied. This would increase its resistance against staining.

Porcelain Tiles have certain advantages over other options which are listed below

Porcelain is very resistant to tremendous wear and tear. This is because it has a hard, durable surface and the durability can be seen in most malls and places that have a high traffic of shoppers at all times.
They are ideal for the kitchen, which needs a lot of cleaning at all times. They can resist strong chemicals and acids and therefore are easier to clean.
Natural tiles are chip resistant. Besides, if the situation does arise that the tile does chip, you need not be worried. The chipped portion can never be seen too easily as it is of the same color.

These tiles have seen a meteoric rise in the industry. The past few years have witnessed many techniques and methods that been devised to create new patterns, textures, and such additional elements. Glazed tiles offer one the option of creating limitless designs and colors. Sometimes, these effects can cause a few changes in the constituency of the tile. It may make the tile lose its resistance to certain chemicals.

The particular characteristics of the tile dictate the kind of use it would hold for the designer who is planning to use it his/her home interior designs. One has to know the performance, maintenance, the aesthetics, and the budget for its appropriate use.

Modern vs Contemporary Bedroom Furniture

If you are shopping for a whole new set of furniture for your bedroom, you will probably be a bit bewildered by the array of styles and designs that are available in the market currently. You will find both – the furniture you thought you wanted and the furniture you didn’t even know existed; everything from antique, faux-antique, modern, contemporary, rustic, transitional, and so on. The smartest thing you can do is to take your time to research all available choices, which, nowadays, is easily done over the Internet. Learn all you can about the different furnishing styles, compare prices, and most importantly, develop a clear idea of what you yourself can live with. Make a note of the things you need – a bed, an armoire, mirrored dresser, a couple of nightstand with drawers, armchairs, stools, and so on – and decide if you want to buy an entire bedroom furniture set all at once or would rather prefer to buy assorted pieces.

Like the furnishing for the rest of your house, bedroom furniture too should be a matter of personal preference – your taste and comfort should be paramount. That said, you should also consider utility and fashion factors. Do you want bedroom furniture that is easy to maintain or do you have the time for high-maintenance furniture? If you have children and pets, for example, it probably won’t do to have furniture that is just too precious to be touched. Then, you should consider if you can endure the furniture you have chosen for many years to come or will it seem rather retrograde in just a few years time? A good design, they say, never goes out of fashion, but it requires the right setting all the same. So do you have the proper space?

The reason many people seem to go for modern and contemporary bedroom furniture is that this kind of furnishing, apart from looking good and being easy to maintain, is usually more in sync with the current life-style. It comes in a variety of space-saving shapes, often with built-in storage areas, so you’ll have no trouble making the smallest bedroom look open, uncluttered, and pleasant. Being light-weight, it is also easy to shift the furniture around and give your bedroom a different ambiance from time to time.

The term ‘Modern’, as applied to furniture here, refers mainly to the furniture designs that were created by the Bauhaus School of Design in Germany in the period between the two World Wars. Founded by Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus school pursued innovative designs that were remarkable – especially in light of the Baroque style of furnishings that were in vogue at the time – for their clean lines and radically simplified forms, and the emphasis on functionality. The Modern Furniture Designs incorporated materials like steel, glass, and plastics, creating an unheard-of feel of visual lightness and space.

The advent of the Nazis and the outbreak of the Second World War caused many of the Bauhaus designers to leave the country and immigrate to the United States. They brought their modern design concepts in this manner to a new and receptive land, where they were, variously, adapted, assimilated, and transformed into further innovative concepts.

A good example of ‘Modern’ bedroom furniture is Gustav Hassenpflug’s Folding Table. When not in use, the table-top can be folded down to a mere 4 inches. Another great and space-saving furniture piece is the platform bed, originally designed by Mies Van Der Rohe . It has a simple design that looks good in any kind of bedroom and it offers storage space inside, which is a boon if you have a small area.

When we speak of ‘Contemporary’ in furniture design, on the other hand, we mean the styles and trends that are current today. Contemporary furniture design can be inspired from any design, be it modern, antique, ethnic, rustic, fine art, nature, technology, etc. If you like imaginative and creative bedroom furniture that stretches the conventional and might just border on the eccentric, then contemporary furniture is for you. Contemporary bedroom furniture seeks to extend design boundaries with startling and elegant contours, without sacrificing comfort and functionality. It is sleek, void of embellishments, and can come in muted or bold colors. It comes in different materials – recycled steel, aluminum, chrome, glass, wood, faux-wood, and with fabrics like linen, cotton, jute, silk, organic hemp, recycled polyester fabric, wool, natural latex foam.
